I like to imagine that much of my work was created for
a specific purpose by a turn of the century scientist. The objects in
the La Brea series might have been used for simple study and comparison,
as tools for alchemy, or as a first step in the process of bringing these
creatures back to life.
In a way, the La Brea series has fulfilled the fantasies
I had as a child growing up near the La Brea Tar Pits. As I coax the skulls
from molten glass, I become the scientist discovering the secrets of creation,
carefully pulling real fossils from the tar where they have rested for
thousands of years.
